Self-compassion vs self-love: Which is more important?

Self-love, chocolate and confessions

Hey you,

Perhaps you’ve worked really hard on mastering your inner thoughts and now you don’t talk to yourself like the school bully picking on the nerdy kid. Yey, you have gained self-compassion!

This is an amazing milestone on the way to pure self-love!

But what’s the difference between self-love and self-compassion, and do we really need both?

Well, yes, if we want to live a life we are passionate about, that allows us to thrive and be satisfied and proud of. Who doesn’t want that?

Self-compassion is part of the way there (and it’s bloody hard for us to achieve sometimes!) It involves treating ourselves kindly like we would a good friend, rather than constantly criticising or belittling ourselves.

Self-love is a little bigger, it involves truly appreciating, valuing and loving ourselves as someone who is worthy of love and respect.

When we LOVE ourselves, we’re more likely to take actions to support our growth as a person, physically, mentally and spiritually.

If you’re someone who habitually avoids therapy and forms of self-care, this is important for you to hear.

Denying ourselves the unconditional love we are able to provide to ourselves is akin to living in a chocolate factory and denying ourselves any chocolate (aka, a tragedy).

We have all of this goodness and we give it out to our friends/family/partners etc but when it comes to ourselves? Access denied.

This month I’m going to focus a lot on increasing our self-compassion and our self-love, so pay attention and I’ll give you as much as possible to help you on this quest because you know what? I LOVE YOU, and I want you to love you too,

Sincerely,
Someone who took a very long time to learn this stuff! x

I’m back! Here's what's changed and how it benefits you... Hi!! Oh my word, the amount of times I have rewritten this email in my head and now I’m finally sending it (in a mad rush ‘cause, Mum life…) It has been so, so long since we last “spoke”. Today I am BACK TO WORK after my maternity leave! (Part-time, but I'm here!) I am GIDDY that I get to work again. I am so grateful for the privilege of spending so much precious time with my loves and finding my feet as a mother, but at the same...

This book helped me make sense of SO many things Hello lovely people. Wow, it was almost two months ago when I last wrote to you! I hope the summer is treating you well and you are being kind to yourselves. I have been reading lots, taking things at a slower pace and nurturing myself and my bump as much as possible. Only three months to go until I meet my daughter, time is flying! A book recommendation for you One of the books that was recommended to me several times by therapist colleagues,...

Helping ourselves feel good again - using occupational therapy I was trying to articulate how I’ve been feeling lately to a friend but was struggling with it. When I remembered to plug my OT (occupational therapy) brain back in, it all made perfect sense. In occupational therapy and occupational science, one of the underpinning beliefs is that taking part in the things that are meaningful, important and necessary to us (as complete individuals in our own unique lives) is crucial to our...
